Thirty Cents on the Dollar

Three companies closed this week. One built a world 150 million people loved and couldn't afford to keep it running. One replaced 250 humans with a smaller, smarter machine. One helped founders dream — and got eaten by the dreams it was teaching.

Rec Room — Seattle, WA. Founded 2016 by former Microsoft engineers. Peaked at a $3.5 billion valuation in 2021. Raised $294 million total. Shut down June 1, 2026 — Xbox servers came offline June 8. The economics were always the problem: Rec Room kept only 30 cents on the dollar from player-made content after app store fees and creator payouts, compared with about 70 cents from content the company made itself. 150 million players. Couldn't make the math work. CEO Nick Fajt: "Rec Room was a very special place, built by a very special group of people." On the subreddit, a parent asked how to tell their autistic son that the friends he'd made there were now gone. Root cause: burn rate — unit economics of user-generated content platforms.

Opendoor India — San Francisco proptech, India operations. Announced closure June 10, 2026. CEO Kaz Nejatian posted the announcement on X — explicitly citing a push toward AI-native teams and smaller US-based operations. About 250 employees in Chennai and Bengaluru, most handling manual workflows across fragmented systems, lost their jobs. VC Sheel Mohnot wrote: "As manual work gets replaced by AI, a lot of jobs will be lost in India." India is the world's largest Global Capability Center market — 2.36 million workers, $100 billion in annual revenue — and Opendoor became a flashpoint for what happens when AI makes the math of offshore labor obsolete. Root cause: AI displacement — product restructuring around machine labor.

Cuttles — Copenhagen, Denmark. Cuttles ApS, SaaS startup helping 30,000+ founders write business plans, build financial models, and pitch investors. Platform went dark June 11, 2026. The website now reads: "Cuttles is no longer operating." Support stopped. Founders discovered their plans were gone. No public statement from the team. Root cause: mistimed market — business-planning SaaS killed by the AI tools it was helping founders understand. The irony is brutal: Cuttles existed to help startups survive. It was erased by the same wave it was teaching founders to ride.
