Thirty Cents on the Dollar

Three companies closed this week. Rec Room — 150 million players, a $3.5B peak, and economics it could never escape. Opendoor India — 250 offshore workers replaced by AI-native teams in a single Wednesday post. Cuttles — a startup planning tool for founders, deleted by the AI tools it was teaching founders to use. One song for all three.

Issue 2 — The Startup Failure Museum — Week of June 8, 2026

Three companies closed this week. One built a world 150 million people loved and couldn't afford to keep it running. One replaced 250 humans with a smaller, smarter machine. One helped founders dream — and got eaten by the dreams it was teaching.
One song for all three.

The Failures Behind the Song

Rec Room — Seattle, WA. Founded 2016 by former Microsoft engineers. Peaked at a $3.5 billion valuation in 2021. Raised $294 million total. Shut down June 1, 2026 — Xbox servers came offline June 8. The economics were always the problem: Rec Room kept only 30 cents on the dollar from player-made content after app store fees and creator payouts, compared with about 70 cents from content the company made itself. 150 million players. Couldn't make the math work. CEO Nick Fajt: "Rec Room was a very special place, built by a very special group of people." On the subreddit, a parent asked how to tell their autistic son that the friends he'd made there were now gone. Root cause: burn rate — unit economics of user-generated content platforms.
Opendoor India — San Francisco proptech, India operations. Announced closure June 10, 2026. CEO Kaz Nejatian posted the announcement on X — explicitly citing a push toward AI-native teams and smaller US-based operations. About 250 employees in Chennai and Bengaluru, most handling manual workflows across fragmented systems, lost their jobs. VC Sheel Mohnot wrote: "As manual work gets replaced by AI, a lot of jobs will be lost in India." India is the world's largest Global Capability Center market — 2.36 million workers, $100 billion in annual revenue — and Opendoor became a flashpoint for what happens when AI makes the math of offshore labor obsolete. Root cause: AI displacement — product restructuring around machine labor.
Cuttles — Copenhagen, Denmark. Cuttles ApS, SaaS startup helping 30,000+ founders write business plans, build financial models, and pitch investors. Platform went dark June 11, 2026. The website now reads: "Cuttles is no longer operating." Support stopped. Founders discovered their plans were gone. No public statement from the team. Root cause: mistimed market — business-planning SaaS killed by the AI tools it was helping founders understand. The irony is brutal: Cuttles existed to help startups survive. It was erased by the same wave it was teaching founders to ride.

Lyrics: Thirty Cents on the Dollar

[Verse 1] A decade on the virtual campus Former Microsoft kids who dreamed in rooms A hundred fifty million people Laughing in the glow of borrowed moons Nick Fajt said we built a whole dimension Three hundred million dollars burned and cold Thirty cents on every dollar players spent Not enough to break even, not to hold
[Pre-Chorus] Yearbook photos, Discord handles Someone asked how to tell an autistic kid his friends are gone Save your avatars before noon Pacific Then say goodbye to everything you built
[Chorus] AI ate the runway Code replaced the crew Built a world that millions loved And still could not break through Thirty cents on the dollar That's what a player's worth When the ledger doesn't love you You fold the virtual earth
[Verse 2] In Chennai and Bengaluru the desks Held two-fifty pairs of working hands Kaz Nejatian typed it on a Wednesday AI-native teams, we understand From GCC to your inbox Monday A watershed the venture capitalists said Not a layoff, not a restructuring Just the old arithmetic finally dead
[Pre-Chorus] Sheel Mohnot posted what we feared As the manual work leaves, so do the jobs in India here One city office full of humans One model doing everything they were
[Chorus] AI ate the runway Code replaced the crew Built a world that millions loved And still could not break through Thirty cents on the dollar That's what a player's worth When the ledger doesn't love you You fold the virtual earth
[Bridge] And in Copenhagen a small Danish startup Helped thirty thousand founders write the plans Cuttles is no longer operating The platform's dark, the server's cold, the support just ran The cruelest joke in all of startup history A tool for dreamers killed by dreamers' tools Eleven June two thousand twenty-six The ledger finally wins, the ledger always rules
[Outro] AI ate the runway Code replaced the crew One for the economics One for the offshore view One who helped the dreamers Gone without a trace When the ledger doesn't love you You leave without a face When the ledger doesn't love you You leave
